The Personal Productivity Equation

It’s not the hours you put in your work that counts, it’s the work you put in the hours.
– Sam Ewing

Newton’s First Law of Motion states that:

An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.

Although this is not a post about Physics, we can apply the same rule to personal productivity. I’m sure you are familiar with the phrase, “If you want something done, give it to a busy man.”

Why do you think this is so? Applying Newton’s law, “an object (man) in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction.” Motion=Momentum. It implies movement, force, speed or velocity. This means that an extremely busy person doesn’t have to roused from the couch to get up and do something.

How many of you know how difficult it is to get out of bed in the morning even after you’ve slept a good 8 hours? It takes a lot of effort to open those eyelids (some don’t), swing those legs out of bed and prepare for the day especially if there’s no reason to get up. But a busy man who has his day planned gets up like clock work to start his day. He knows what he needs to do, how things needs to be done, and how much time he needs to finish the job. And if you give him a task to do outside of what’s on his plate, he would most likely find a slot to get the task done.

Each one of us is given 24 hours a day. No more, no less. We can slave away and spend hours doing a single task and still not get it done or we can be wise and get a million things done in a day and still have time to spare.

Simply put,

Personal Productivity = Choice

What we choose to do will determine our success. Whether it’s choosing between playing an online game like Final Fantasy, or doing something productive like taking an online paid survey, or just staying in bed the whole day, the output will always be consistent with the input.

As Albert Einstein put it, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results.”
